Joi AI vs Candy AI: Which One Should You Pay For?

GuideJoi AI vs Candy AI: Which One Should You Pay For?

Candy AI is cheaper, better looking and has working voice. Joi AI has more characters and a longer refund window. Here is where the money actually goes.

Two paid companion apps, two very different ways of charging you. Joi AI sells a subscription and then sells you Neurons to actually use the features. Candy AI sells a subscription, includes unlimited chat, and meters images and video in tokens. If you are picking one to pay for, that difference matters more than any character count.

We do not run paid subscriptions here. Everything below comes from published pricing pages, terms of service, refund policies and what users report on Trustpilot and forums. We rate Candy.ai 9.8 out of 10, with images at 10 and memory at 7.2. Joi AI has no public pricing page we could find, which tells you something on its own.

The short version

Candy AI is the safer buy for most adults. The price is on the site, the free tier is tiny but honest, images look like the character you built, and voice messages exist. Joi AI is the more interesting product if you want a big cast of characters and video inside the chat window, and you are willing to budget Neurons on top of the subscription.

What each platform actually is

Joi AI is run by Novi Limited, a company registered in Nicosia, Cyprus. The same operator also sells EVA AI. Ofcom opened a probe into Joi's age checks in January 2026 and closed it on July 31, 2026 with no findings. The regulator put Joi at roughly 6.5 million monthly users worldwide at the end of 2025.

Candy AI is operated by EverAI Limited, a Maltese company. Both are web products. Neither ships a native app in the App Store or Play Store, though Candy offers a progressive web app you can pin to a home screen. Some comparison sites hand Joi the better mobile browser experience; that is a browser impression, not an app.

NSFW and filters

Both gate adult content behind an 18+ age check at signup. Candy unlocks uncensored chat on paid plans only; free users cannot reach 18+ media at all. Joi allows uncensored chat for adults, and most reviewers describe its filtering as light. Some users do report blocks that break a scene mid-story.

Neither platform documents filter levels you can adjust, which is the kind of control you find on other apps. Candy's rules are the stricter of the two on paper: it bans minor-like content, bars real-person likenesses, and says it reports abuse material to NCMEC. That last part is not a marketing line to shrug at, it is the standard you want a platform to hold.

Memory: both fail, differently

This is the least flattering section for both. Joi's terms say the chatbot continuously learns from your interactions, which sounds better than it behaves. Trustpilot reviewers say characters forget prior plot threads, and long chats drift. Candy is more mechanical about it: users report context resetting after 48 to 72 hours. Neither holds a relationship storyline together for weeks.

Candy Premium Plus bundles user personas and 20 memory slots, which is the closest either gets to structured recall. If memory is your deciding factor, neither of these is the pick. Secrets AI is built around it and charges for the privilege, and our Secrets AI vs Candy AI comparison lays out the trade.

Images, video and voice

Candy's pictures are among the most realistic in this category, and its marketing claims photorealistic consistency across 30+ generations. Reviewers mostly back that up. Each image costs about 4 tokens. Image-to-video runs about 12 tokens, and users report clips up to 120 seconds. Voice calls are in beta at roughly 3 tokens per minute, and voice messages are included.

Joi generates images through a Premium subscription plus Neurons, and the results are fast but uneven, meaning the face can shift between shots. Video exists inside the chat window. Joi's terms price a single video view at up to 1,900 Neurons, and users report live video calls near 2,000 Neurons for five minutes. Voice is the weak spot: reviewers call it weak or disputed, and we could not confirm working voice messages. Some users report photo prices climbing on certain characters.

One Joi video view can cost more Neurons than a month of Candy's token allowance. Check what you are buying before you tap generate.

Characters and customization

Joi has the bigger library. Reviewers repeat the vendor's claim of 300+ preset characters, and the range of looks and personalities is wider than Candy's. Your first custom character comes with Premium; extra characters reportedly cost 1,000 Neurons, or $12.70 to $25.40 depending on pack size. The builder leans on looks and personality sliders.

Candy's cast is smaller but the characters stay consistent, which matters more than it sounds when you are paying per image. Its Create My AI builder sets ethnicity, body type, hair, voice, hobbies and personality, with female, male and anime options. Building a character from scratch costs about 10 tokens. Neither platform documents group chat.

Candy's numbers are on its site. Joi's are not: we found no public pricing page, and Joi's terms say prices vary by region. One comparison site claims Joi at $2.38/mo on annual billing; treat that as unconfirmed. Third-party listings put the annual rate around $5.08/mo, which is what we use.

The real cost is in the metering. Joi's terms charge 4 Neurons per romantic message, and reviewers put extra Neuron spending at $15 to $30 a month. That is a subscription plus a second bill for the thing you subscribed to. Candy heavy media users report $25 to $80 a month all in, driven by the 100-token monthly allowance running dry. Candy's bank statements read EverAI; Joi's charges show as joi.com.

Free tiers are not trials

Candy gives you five messages total, one image and one custom character. Joi gives you 10 Neurons, a Discord bonus and daily rewards that users report. Ten Neurons is a couple of romantic messages under Joi's own terms. Neither free tier tells you how the product feels after a week, so test both at peak hours before you commit to 12 months.

Refunds differ sharply. Joi offers 14 days but only in narrow cases: fraud, a one-time mistaken purchase, or termination by Joi. Candy gives you 24 hours, card payments only, and only if you have spent 20 tokens or fewer. EU and UK users get a prorated 14-day right from Candy. Joi's policy warns that chats may be disclosed if you file a chargeback. Neither platform publishes an independent security audit that we could find.

Privacy and safety

Candy falls under GDPR as a Maltese company. It encrypts data in transit but makes no end-to-end claim, and de-identified chats may be used to train models. Records can stay up to three years after inactivity; deletion runs through Settings, Danger Zone. Joi uses chats to develop its AI with no opt-out we could see, mentions no end-to-end encryption, and sets no fixed retention period. Novi says it does not sell user information.

Both are 18+ products with real obligations. Use a separate email, skip real names and photos, and set a monthly budget before you start. If privacy is the deciding factor, our ranking of 8 companion apps breaks down which ones handle data better.

Where each one wins

  • Joi AI wins on: character variety, a video tool inside the chat, a 14-day refund window, and a mobile browser experience some reviewers prefer.
  • Candy AI wins on: price clarity, realistic and consistent images, working voice messages and beta calls, unlimited chat on Premium, and a free tier you can actually inspect.
  • Both lose on: memory over long chats, group chat, native apps, and publishing a security audit.

Which to pick

If you want one subscription, a predictable bill and pictures that look like the person you are talking to, buy Candy AI. Read our full Candy.ai review first, because the token allowance is the trap.

If you want a large cast, in-chat video and a longer refund window, Joi AI is worth the Neurons, as long as you go in knowing the voice features are shaky and every romantic message has a price. Do not buy the annual plan before you have run a month at peak hours.

Alternatives worth a look

Note the naming trap: "AI JOI" is a guided adult roleplay format, not the Joi brand. If you search for it you will land on unrelated apps.

SpicyChat carries 300,000+ community characters; one roundup lists it at $5/mo, our data says $5.95 since September 8, 2026. GirlfriendGPT runs about $10/mo per one roundup, $15 monthly or $12 yearly per our data. Secret Desires AI adapts instructions to your patterns, per a roundup. Cherrypop AI gets credit for quick session setup. Character AI has millions of user-created characters and no NSFW at all. For memory-first options, see our OurDream AI alternatives and the Candy AI vs OurDream AI breakdown.

Bottom line

Candy AI is the safer pick for most adults: clearer pricing, better visuals, real voice. Joi AI is fun for the huge character cast and in-chat video, but the subscription-plus-Neurons double-dip, the missing voice and the rising photo prices are real watch-outs. Try both free tiers, read both privacy policies, and decide what your monthly ceiling is before either company does it for you.

Frequently asked questions

On annual billing, Candy AI is $3.99/mo ($47.88/yr) against a reported $5.08/mo for Joi AI ($60.95/yr). Both free tiers are tiny, so your real spend depends on how much media you generate. Joi also charges Neurons per romantic message, which pushes the effective cost up.

Candy AI. Its images are among the most realistic in this category and the character stays consistent across generations, which is why our images rating for Candy is high. Joi generates fast but the face can shift between shots, and some users report photo prices climbing on certain characters.

Joi AI for variety and story flow, since its library is larger and its filtering is described as light by most reviewers. Candy AI is better if you care about seeing the character consistently. Neither holds a long storyline well: Joi users report forgotten plot threads and Candy users report context resetting after 48 to 72 hours.

No. Both are web-based. Candy AI also offers a progressive web app you can pin to your home screen, but neither ships in the App Store or Google Play.

Joi AI allows 14 days but only in narrow cases: fraud, a one-time mistaken purchase, or termination by Joi. Candy AI gives 24 hours, card payments only, and only if you have spent 20 tokens or fewer; EU and UK users get a prorated 14-day right.
